(WINNIPEG) — The Winnipeg Humane Society is reaching cat-pacity. To make room for the hundreds of cats that arrive weekly, the WHS is waiving adoption fees on adult cats (more than six months) on Friday, July 17. Kittens six months and under will be $50 to adopt. More than 2,700 cats have arrived at the shelter so far this year, with over 220 coming in July alone.
On Friday, July 17 from 11 am to 7 pm, there will be no fees to adopt a cat over six months of age. Kittens under six months will be $50 to adopt.
“Cats start reproducing when it’s warm outside, and we start seeing more and more cats and kittens come to the shelter ,” said Judy Dean, Adoptions Manager at The WHS. “We’re happy to do whatever we can to help these cats find loving homes.”
The normal adoption fee for cats is $79 and kittens are between $129 and $179. The promotion also stands at The WHS’s satellite adoption centres – Best West Pet Foods, PetSmart, PetValu and Petland, where WHS adoptable cats are also up for adoption, though potential adopters should call before they go due to limited availability.
“Last week, 175 cats arrived at The WHS – with 42 cats arriving in one single day,” said Dean. “Right now we have more than 145 cats up for adoption, both here at the WHS and at our satellite locations. We expect the number of incoming cats to increase in the coming days as cats come back from foster care.”
While The WHS offers programs like SNAP (subsidized spay and neuter assistance program) and TNR (Trap Neuter Release) to fight Winnipeg’s cat overpopulation crisis, the shelter continues to experience an influx of cats every summer.
Adoption fees will be waived, but the same adoption process will be in effect. Potential adopters need to bring ID with current address, a carrier, and their patience as the adoption process can take over an hour. All cats adopted from The WHS are spayed/neutered, have a tattoo ID, first vaccination, 30 days of PetPlan insurance and a two-week health check.
