Winnipeg Humane Society helps cat owners “Beat the Heat” this February
This February, cat owners can get their female cat spayed for only $20 at the Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS). Call 204-888-7627 to book an appointment today. The WHS is asking owners of female cats to “Beat the Heat” and help the WHS reach 500 cat spays in the month of February. Beat the Heat is funded by PetSmart Charities of Canada.
“Winnipeg has too many cats that are left intact,” said Dr. Erika Anseeuw, WHS Director of Animal Health. “The more cats we fix before they come into their first heat the better. We want to prevent unwanted litters and stop contributing to cat overpopulation.”
The WHS offers a year-round subsidized spay and neuter program for Winnipeggers on low-income to help keep unwanted litters off the streets. Shelters are overcrowded and too many cats remain homeless.
“Beat the Heat specifically targets female cats as they carry the litters,” said Dr. Anseeuw. “This way we minimize how many cats overwhelm shelters during spring and summer, the peak breeding season.”
Cats should be a minimum of four months of age, in good health, should be under the care of a veterinarian and be up to date with vaccinations. Cats must be transported to and from their appointment in a pet carrier.
